Open position

Data Journalist

Full-time / Contract · Remote (anywhere)

Turn raw data into stories that actually change how people think.

The role

You know that feeling when a single chart lands harder than a 2,000-word op-ed? That’s what we’re after.

On Radar is building the next generation of AI-powered news intelligence — and we need someone who can make data speak. This isn’t a "write SEO blog posts and call it journalism" role. You’ll work at the intersection of real-time data pipelines, AI-generated insights, and editorial storytelling.

You’ll have access to a firehose of structured news data across tech, science, policy, and finance — and the freedom to find the signals nobody else is seeing.

Responsibilities

What you'll do

  • Mine our aggregated news intelligence platform for patterns, anomalies, and emerging narratives that deserve deeper coverage
  • Build data-driven stories using visualisations, interactive charts, and compelling analysis — not just walls of text
  • Collaborate with our AI/ML team to design new editorial features (think: automated trend detection that actually makes sense to humans)
  • Develop and maintain dashboards that surface real-time editorial insights
  • Fact-check AI-generated summaries and add the context that machines miss
  • Pitch original investigations that combine public datasets with our proprietary news intelligence

Requirements

What you bring

  • A portfolio that shows you can turn messy data into clear, engaging stories (academic projects count — the work speaks for itself)
  • Comfort with at least one data tool: Python/pandas, R, SQL, or even advanced spreadsheet wizardry
  • Strong writing — you can explain a regression model to your grandma and a policy implication to a CEO
  • Curiosity that won’t quit: you read arxiv papers for fun, have opinions about chart libraries, or maintain a side project that’s slightly unhinged
  • Familiarity with data visualisation (D3.js, Observable, Datawrapper, Flourish, or similar)
  • Bonus: experience with news APIs, RSS pipelines, or NLP/AI tooling

Culture

Why you'll love it

  • No meetings-that-could-have-been-emails culture — we ship async and respect deep work
  • Direct access to cutting-edge AI models and a massive real-time news dataset
  • Your byline on stories read by a growing audience of tech-savvy, curious humans
  • Real ownership — you’ll shape what data journalism means at On Radar, not follow a playbook someone wrote in 2015
  • Flexible hours, remote-first, and a team that thinks work-life balance isn’t a perk — it’s the baseline

Compensation

Competitive, based on experience. We’re transparent about ranges during the process — no "depends on experience" bait-and-switch.
